New Europe - New Energy Network
The New Europe - New Energy Network aims to work with
partners in the UK and the New EU Member States to promote sustainable
approaches to energy use.
Sustainable Energy is a key EU concern.
The EU, national governments and local governments are all looking
for ways to increase the role played by renewable energy.
EU enlargement has played a crucial role in reshaping energy
and environmental policies in Eastern and Central Europe. However,
in spite of the accession of 10 new countries to the EU in 2004
and 2 new countries in 2007 and the application of strict renewable
energy targets, there are still many barriers to developing this
potential.
The New Europe – New Energy Network is being planned as
an information resource with access to educational training materials
covering technological options and associated planning and public
engagement issues.
The network, based at the Open University in the UK, will be
very much ‘two way’, initiating a two-way dialogue
and effective information flow between appropriate sources and
recipients in the new EU member states, EU candidate countries,
and potential EU Candidate countries.
In addition to a web based contact and information system, it
will involve regular seminars, workshops and conferences in the
new member countries plus parallel gatherings in the UK for university
and industry partners, to consolidate a network of contacts and
build links between members.
The network aims to give a head start to those who want to develop
a strategic approach to understanding the new markets in Eastern
Europe and to offer consulting services and research expertise
in a fast growing market for renewable energy technologies.
